Every day, our Nurse Next Door teams around Australia have a front-row seat to the gaps that exist in our aged care system and the older Australians who can fall through the cracks.
We see the person struggling at home who has no one to advocate for the care they need. We see the person waiting for government-funded care who simply doesn't have the means to pay for support in the meantime. We see families desperately trying to get help for someone they love, without success.
This isn't a replacement for government-funded aged care. The Making Lives Better Million is designed to help bridge the gap between the care an older Australian needs now and the care currently available to them, by providing immediate, short-term care completely free.
We know we can't solve the aged care funding problem, but we believe we can make a difference to some of the people who have fallen through the cracks. That's why Nurse Next Door has committed to providing $1 million worth of free care over the next year.
Now we just need to find the people who could use our help the most.
When Co-Founders Amber Biesse and Matt Fitton started Nurse Next Door Australia in 2019, they had one location in Melbourne providing care to a handful of clients. Today, the network spans more than 70 territories across Australia, with 4,000+ employees supporting more than 2,000 clients, all connected by one shared purpose: Making Lives Better.
Behind that national footprint are locally owned and operated Nurse Next Door businesses, deeply embedded in the communities they serve and supported by an incredible workforce of caregivers and nurses who have chosen a career caring for others.
Every day across Australia, older people are falling through the cracks of our aged care system and not receiving the care they need. In our line of work, we see those people face to face.
Amber recognised that Nurse Next Door already had all the ingredients to help. She just needed to find a way to unlock them. She believed that if she and Matt could cover the wage costs of providing the care, Nurse Next Door's Franchise Partners across the country would contribute their time and resources to coordinate and deliver that care without making a margin.
Reflecting on the success of Nurse Next Door and the business she and Matt had built, Amber realised they were now in a position to use some of that success to give back. They committed to funding the caregiver and nursing wages and associated employment costs required to deliver $1 million worth of care, completely free to older Australians who have fallen through the cracks of the aged care system.
People who need help can apply through the Making Lives Better Million, and those applications will help us find the older Australians we believe we can make the greatest difference to. Once approved, their local Nurse Next Door team will coordinate and deliver the care.
That was the unlock - Amber and Matt would provide the funding, Franchise Partners would contribute their time and resources without making a margin, and Nurse Next Door's national network of caregivers and nurses would provide the care.
Together, it allows us to mobilise the collective power of the Nurse Next Door network and turn the success of the business into something that can make a meaningful difference in the lives of older Australians who need it most.
And that is how the Making Lives Better Million was born.
We know $1 million won't fix Australia's aged care system, and we know we can't help everyone. But we believe that if we can make even one person's life better through what we're doing, then it's worth doing.

While $1 million sounds like a lot of free care, we know we won't be able to help everyone who applies, even where there is a genuine need for help. How far our free care will stretch will depend on the number of applications we receive and the level of care each person needs.
Applications will be assessed based on each person's individual circumstances, the urgency and level of need, the difference our care could make, and whether Nurse Next Door provides services in their community.
